Invention AbstractA detailed description of the task can be found in Gonzalez, Lerch, and Lebiere (2003). WPP is an isomorph of a real world scheduling task in a large scale operation. The system is made of chains of tanks with each chain assigned a deadline for distribution. Participants can open and close pumps in the chain, with a max use of 5 pumps. Water input from outside the tank occurs at anytime without the participants' pre-knowing or controlling. Feedback is given throughout the experiment on number of gallons missed when deadlines have passed. WPP has been used extensively to study automaticity development, situation awareness, learning, and adaptation. In addition, we developed an ACT-R cognitive model that reproduces human learning in this task.
